A friend of mine was visiting Casa de las Companas with her dog for a few years on her own (not belonging to any organized pet provided therapy group). I was contacted by her back in 2003 to see if I could substitute for her as her dog was ill. After realizing the joy I was experiencing and giving during the visits, I decided that Cody and I needed to get certified and do this on a regular basis through a recognized organization. That is when I first became involved with Love On A Leash.   A year later, Dana and I went through the program. Since then, Cody and Dana, who are both adopted,  have alternated visiting Casa as well as libraries and schools and wherever else we are needed.

In 1999 my husband and I adopted a shelter pet - a calico cat we named Moorea. Moorea has so much love to give, we just had to share her with others. When I retired from teaching in 2004, I began volunteering in local senior living facilities. Moorea and I have been certified members of Love on a Leash since January, 2005. We also do pet-provided therapy visits with The Elizabeth Hospice. On a regular basis we visit Remington Club, Belmont Village, and Redwood Terrace. Due to an essay I wrote about my volunteer work with Moorea, I won the California Volunteer of the Year Award for 2007.

Sadly, Kathy lost her beloved Moli to lung cancer in October, 2008 (go to In Loving Memory to read more about Moli).  Until then, Kathy and Moli were active in their visits to various convelescent homes and assisted living facilities, San Diego Hospice and local libraries.   Kathy has received specialty certifications for her work at Hospice, with Alzheimer's patients, and with the elderly, and has received the Attorney General's Citizenship Award for compassionate visits in the community.

In 2003 we adopted Caper, a black lab, who was just retired from service as a guide dog. Soon afterward she was a busy therapy dog. She visits the children’s section of the Rancho Bernardo and Poway Library every Wednesday and Saturday respectively. Also she does weekly visits to the Remington Club and the Poway Health Care Center. She visits the Poway Adult Day Care Center twice a month. I am a retired teacher but still substitute in the Poway Unified School System.

Caper and I do visits regularly and I am a backup when Missy is not available to take Caper. Caper is 12 years old but always willing to visit all her friends at the different facilities. I worked for General Dynamics and Lockheed Martin after they acquired the General Dynamics Space Systems Division. I retired in 2001. Caper is an inspiration to keep me busy and active to do pet visits together but also take walks, go to the dog park and other activities.
