Denen, Mike and Nancy & Moorea/Calico

In 1999 we adopted a shelter pet - a calico cat we named Moorea. Moorea has so much love to give, we just had to share her with others. We volunteer at local senior living facilities and have been certified members of Love on a Leash since January, 2005. We also do pet-provided therapy visits with The Elizabeth Hospice. On a regular basis we visit Remington Club, Belmont Village, and Redwood Terrace.

  Elliot, Barbara & Eltie/Cocapoo
Garmon, Claudene & Charlie/Cat

In 2007 I adopted a shelter cat – an orange and white tabby named Charlie. Charlie is full of personality – friendly, mellow, calm in public and he loves people. His nickname is “The Ambassador of Love”. He and I became certified members of Love On A Leash in January 2008. We started our pet-provided therapy at a local Assisted Living Facility. Now, we go to an elementary school where Charlie listens to individual students read. With his non judgmental listening, Charlie is helping the students perfect their reading skills which helps build their confidence in reading out loud. Charlie and I thoroughly enjoy bringing love and joy to those that we visit.

Kaufman, Robin with Cody and Dana/Poodles

A friend of mine was visiting Casa de las Companas with her dog for a few years on her own (not belonging to any organized pet provided therapy group). I was contacted by her back in 2003 to see if I could substitute for her as her dog was ill. After realizing the joy I was experiencing and giving during the visits, I decided that Cody and I needed to get certified and do this on a regular basis through a recognized organization. That is when I first became involved with Love On A Leash.   A year later, Dana and I went through the program. Since then, Cody and Dana, who are both adopted,  have alternated visiting Casa as well as libraries and schools and wherever else we are needed.

Charlie is also a certified search and rescue dog with the San Diego Sheriff's Search and Rescue unit. Along with his three brother beagles we respond to search for missing people all over the county. Last year I received " Volunteer of the Year" award from Calif Peace Officers Association.   To earn kibble for the beagles I work backstage at the Civic Theater in the wardrobe department.

Shimada-Cicirelli, Mika & Coco/Toy Poodle

Mika Shimada believes the Tail Wagging Tutor program is a perfect opportunity to pay it forward to the community with the assistance of her two year old toy poodle, Coco, a 6 pound wonder with a big heart that barely fits inside her tiny body.  Coco teaches Mika how to be compassionate, understanding, patient, resilient, and present for ones in need of our friendship and love.

Mika and Coco visit nursing homes to share Coco’s bountiful love, an  experience enriching both their lives. Mika is certain that children participating in the Tail Wagging Tutor program will connect with Coco in their own unique way and create magical moments that last a lifetime.   Mika treasures each moment watching Coco demonstrate her ability to provide comfort while bringing smiles to people’s faces. Those reflections of happiness always brighten up the room and give courage to people.
